UTL-01 was a tangential product design and manufacturing project that applied the ULTRA-LIGHT RESEARCH design ethos to lightweight, cold-formed titanium utensils. The project aimed to create a kit of bare necessities for eating and cooking: a fork, spoon, and knife, complemented by a spatula, large spoon, and tongs.
Sheet metal cutting and forming was chosen because it can be rapidly prototyped, mass manufactured, and delivers high performance through structural creasing achieved by cold forming. All design, processing, forming, and finishing was done in-house, with the exception of the mass-produced, laser-cut titanium blanks.
Each unit, prototype and final, was given a sequential serial number. This avoided distinguishing "finished" products for sale from their process predecessors, and emphasized the project's focus on iteration through prototyping and manufacturing.
A limited run of sets was sold through ULTRA-LIGHT RESEARCH and exhibited during NYCxDesign as part of American Design Club's "Table Manners" exhibition in 2025.
